Battery, Alternator and Starter Repair in Tomball
Tomball summers are hard on car batteries. Heat speeds up the wear inside a battery, and some batteries fail with no warning at all. If yours is three years old or more, it’s worth having it tested before it leaves you stuck.
A car that won’t start isn’t always a bad battery. The alternator charges the battery while you drive, and the starter turns the engine over. Any of the three, or a corroded cable, can leave you with a click and nothing else. We test the battery, the charging system and the starter first, so you don’t pay for a battery when the alternator is the real problem.
We replace car batteries, alternators and starters on cars, trucks and SUVs, and fix the cables and terminals that connect them. Battery light on, lights dimming, or a car that keeps going flat? Call 936-661-2675 and tell us what it’s doing.
Is It the Battery, the Alternator or the Starter?
All three can leave you with a car that won’t start, but each one fails in its own way. Here’s what each part does, the signs that point to it, and what to check.
Car Battery Replacement
The battery gives the power to start the engine and runs the electrics when the engine is off. When it gets weak, the engine cranks slowly or just clicks. In Texas heat, about three years is a normal life.
Signs of a weak car battery
Slow cranking, rapid clicking, the battery light on the dash, and headlights dimming at idle on older cars. A swollen battery case or a rotten egg smell means it’s failing and should come out.
How often should a car battery be tested?
Once it’s three years old, AAA suggests a test every year. Some batteries fail without any warning signs, so a test is the only way to know.
Does my car need a special battery?
Many newer cars, especially ones with start-stop, use an AGM or EFB battery instead of a standard one. Some also need the new battery registered with the car’s computer after it’s fitted.
What does heat do to a car battery?
Heat speeds up the chemical wear inside the battery and dries it out. Under the hood it can get past 200°F, which is why batteries in hot states wear out sooner than up north.
Good to know: Once a battery is three years old, have it tested every year.
Alternator Repair and Replacement
The alternator charges the battery and runs the electrics while the engine is running. When it fails, the car runs on battery power alone until the battery goes flat, and then it dies.
Signs of a bad alternator
The battery light on while driving, dim or flickering lights, electrics acting up, a whining or growling noise under the hood, a burning rubber smell, and batteries that keep going flat.
Can a bad alternator kill a new battery?
Yes. If the alternator isn’t charging, it will run a new battery flat just like the old one, and it can damage it. That’s why the charging system should be tested before a new battery goes in.
How long can you drive with a bad alternator?
Not long. Once it stops charging, you’re running on what’s left in the battery, which might be a few minutes or an hour or two. Don’t plan a long drive on it.
Is it always the alternator?
No. A worn belt, a loose connection or bad wiring can cause the same symptoms. We test before we replace anything.
Warning: Battery light on while driving means a charging problem. Get it checked before the battery runs flat.
Starter Replacement
The starter is the small motor that turns the engine over when you turn the key or push the button. When it fails, you get a single click, a grind or nothing at all, even with a good battery.
What does a bad starter sound like?
Usually one loud click and no crank, or a grinding or whirring noise when you turn the key. Whirring with no crank means the starter is spinning but not turning the engine.
Is it the starter or the battery?
If a jump gets it started, the battery is the likely problem. If it still just clicks with a jump, the starter or the starter relay is more likely.
What does grinding when starting mean?
Usually the starter gear isn’t meshing with the engine properly. Keep trying and it can damage the starter, so get it looked at.
What affects the cost of a starter replacement?
Mostly the vehicle. On some engines the starter is easy to reach; on others it’s buried and takes a lot more labor. Call with your year, make and model.
Signs: One click, no crank · grinding when starting · starter spins but the engine doesn’t turn.
Car Won’t Start? What It Could Be
A car that won’t start is usually the battery, the starter, a bad connection, or a fuel or ignition problem. What you hear when you turn the key is the best clue.
Why won’t my car start after sitting for a while?
A battery slowly drains while the car sits, and an older one may not have enough left to crank. Two months or more without driving can be enough, especially on a battery that’s three years old or more.
Why won’t my car start when the lights come on?
The lights need far less power than the starter, so a weak battery can still run them. A corroded cable can also let enough through for the lights but not the starter. Or the starter itself has failed.
Why won’t my car start with a new battery?
Check the cables and terminals first. If they’re good, the alternator may not be charging the new battery, or the starter may be failing. A new battery can’t fix either one.
What if it cranks but won’t start?
If the engine turns over normally but won’t fire, the battery and starter are doing their job. The problem is more likely fuel, spark or a sensor, and we diagnose that too.
Good to know: Rapid clicks, one click, grinding or normal cranking each point to a different part.
Battery Light and Charging Problems
The battery light comes on when the charging system has a problem. Despite the name, it usually points to the alternator, the belt or the wiring, not the battery itself.
Is the battery light the same as the check engine light?
No. The battery light is for the charging system. Some cars also turn on the check engine light or show a “check charging system” message for the same fault, and a scan reads the code.
What should I do if the battery light comes on while driving?
Get off the road somewhere safe. The car is running on battery power alone and will die when the battery runs down. AAA’s advice is to pull over and have it towed rather than keep driving.
Why is the battery light on after replacing the battery?
Because the battery probably wasn’t the problem. The light points to charging, so the alternator, belt or wiring is next to check.
Why are my headlights dim or flickering?
Dim, flickering or surging lights are a common sign the alternator isn’t holding a steady charge. A weak battery or a corroded connection can do it too.
Warning: Battery light on while driving: the battery is running down and the car will stall when it’s flat.

Battery & Alternator Repair Questions
No-starts, clicking, the battery light and how long a battery lasts in Texas heat.
How do I know if it’s my battery or my alternator?
If the car starts with a jump and keeps running, the battery is usually the weak one. If it dies again soon after the cables come off, or the battery light comes on while you drive, the alternator is the likely problem. Dim or flickering lights and a whining noise under the hood also point to the alternator. A test tells you for sure.
What are the signs of a bad starter?
One loud click with no crank, a grinding noise when it tries to start, or a starter that spins without turning the engine. A weak battery or a loose cable can look the same, so we test those first.
Why does my car click but won’t start?
Rapid clicking usually means the battery is too weak to turn the starter, or a terminal is loose or corroded. One loud click with no crank points more to the starter or the starter relay.
How long do car batteries last in Texas?
Most car batteries last three to five years, but heat cuts that down. AAA says batteries in hot southern states typically last about three years, compared with five or more in cooler northern areas. Once yours is three years old, have it tested every year.
Why is my battery light on?
The battery light usually means a charging problem, not just a weak battery. Common causes are a failing alternator, a worn or broken belt, or bad wiring. If it comes on while you’re driving, the car is running on battery power alone and can die when the battery runs down, so get it checked soon.
How much does it cost to replace a car battery or alternator?
It depends on the vehicle and the part. Many newer cars, especially ones with start-stop, take an AGM or EFB battery, and some need the new battery registered with the car’s computer. Alternators and starters vary with how hard they are to reach. Call 936-661-2675 with your year, make and model.
