AC blowing hot air? We repair and recharge car air conditioning on cars, trucks and SUVs at our shop on Calvert Rd in Tomball.
Auto AC Repair and Recharge in Tomball
Nobody wants to sit in Tomball traffic in August with the AC blowing hot air. When a car AC quits, it’s usually one of a few things: a refrigerant leak, an AC compressor that won’t kick on, a blocked or damaged condenser, a leaking evaporator, a blend door stuck on heat, or an electrical fault.
A recharge only fixes it if nothing’s leaking. If your AC went warm again a few weeks after the last recharge, something is leaking or failing, and that’s what we find and fix. That’s what a proper car AC service should do.
Looking for car air conditioning repair near you in Tomball? We do car AC repair and recharge on cars, trucks and SUVs, from daily drivers to work trucks and classics. Leak, Compressor or Condenser?
Car AC blowing hot air? The fix depends on why. These are the most common car AC repairs, what each one fixes and the signs that point to it.
Car AC Recharge
A car AC recharge refills the system with refrigerant. It’s the right fix when the system is a little low and not leaking fast. If the AC went warm again soon after the last recharge, the refrigerant is leaking out, and a recharge on its own won’t last.
How much does a car AC recharge cost?
Usually the cheapest AC repair. The price depends on the refrigerant your car takes: most newer cars use R-1234yf, which costs more than the R-134a in older cars.
Should I use a car AC recharge kit or go to a shop?
A parts-store can adds refrigerant without knowing how much is already in the system, so it’s easy to overfill. A shop recharge recovers what’s in there, pulls a vacuum and refills to the exact amount for your car.
Why is my car AC blowing hot air after a recharge?
If a recharge doesn’t bring the cold back, the problem is somewhere else: a compressor that isn’t turning on, an electrical fault or a blend door stuck on heat.
What does a car AC recharge service include?
A proper recharge checks the system pressures and looks for leaks first, so you’re not paying to refill a system that will leak out again.
Signs: AC still cools, but not as cold as it used to.
Car AC Leak Repair
A car AC system is sealed. If the refrigerant is low, it leaked out somewhere. Common leak points are the condenser at the front of the car, the hoses, O-ring seals and the compressor. AC leak repair means finding the leak, replacing the part and then recharging the system.
How do you find a car AC leak?
Leaks are found with UV dye, an electronic leak detector or a pressure test. A small leak can take a dye test and a few days of driving to show up.
Does car AC leak sealer work?
Sealer from a can may plug a small leak for a while, but it can also clog AC parts. Tell the shop if sealer has been used, because it can contaminate their recharge machine.
How much does a car AC leak repair cost?
It depends on what’s leaking. An O-ring or hose costs far less than a condenser or evaporator. The evaporator sits behind the dash, so it takes the most labor.
Why is my car AC leaking water?
Water dripping under the car on a hot day is normal: it’s condensation from the AC drain. Water on the passenger floor inside the car usually means that drain is blocked.
Signs: AC goes warm days or weeks after a recharge · oily residue on AC lines or fittings.
Car AC Compressor Repair
The AC compressor pumps refrigerant around the system. When it fails, the AC blows warm no matter how much refrigerant is in it. Before anyone replaces one, it’s worth finding out why it stopped: often a clutch, fuse, relay or low refrigerant is what’s keeping it from turning on, and that’s a much smaller AC compressor repair.
Why is my car AC compressor not engaging?
The compressor won’t switch on if the refrigerant is too low, a pressure switch is open, or the clutch, relay or fuse has failed. These get checked first because they cost much less than a compressor.
Why does my AC compressor keep turning on and off?
A compressor clicking on and off every few seconds usually means low refrigerant. The pressure switch keeps shutting it off.
How much does an AC compressor replacement cost?
One of the bigger AC repairs. A new compressor normally goes in with a new receiver-drier or accumulator and a flushed system, so debris from the old one doesn’t kill the new one.
Does the AC compressor need oil?
The compressor is lubricated by oil carried in the refrigerant. The right oil type and amount for your car are set when the system is charged.
Signs: AC blows warm · compressor clutch not spinning · grinding or squealing when the AC is on.
Car AC Condenser Replacement
The condenser sits in front of the radiator and gets rid of the heat the AC pulls out of the cabin. Because it’s at the very front of the car, it’s the AC part most often damaged by road debris and front-end bumps.
AC condenser vs compressor: what’s the difference?
The compressor pressurizes the refrigerant, the condenser cools it. A dead compressor stops the AC. A damaged or blocked condenser makes it weak, especially in traffic.
Why does my AC go warm when the car is stopped?
The condenser needs airflow. If its fan stops, the AC stays cold on the highway but goes warm when you’re stopped.
How much does an AC condenser replacement cost?
Usually less than a compressor, but the front bumper often has to come off to reach it, and the system needs a recharge afterwards.
Will cleaning the AC condenser help?
Cleaning bugs and dirt off the condenser can help airflow. It won’t fix a condenser that’s bent or leaking.
Signs: Cold while driving, warm at stops · recent front-end damage · oily spot on the condenser.
Classic Car AC Repair
Most classic cars came with AC that ran on R-12 refrigerant, which hasn’t been made in the US since 1995. Getting a classic cold again means repairing the original system, converting it to R-134a, or fitting a modern aftermarket AC kit.
Classic car AC repair
A system that has sat for years usually needs new hoses, seals and a drier before it will hold a charge. The whole system gets checked before any refrigerant goes in.
Should I put an aftermarket AC kit in my classic?
Aftermarket kits replace the factory system with a modern compressor, condenser and under-dash unit. They cool better than most original systems and use modern refrigerant.
R-12 to R-134a conversion
A conversion changes the fittings, drier and oil so the original system runs on R-134a. It costs less than a full kit, but usually doesn’t cool quite as well as R-12 did.
Signs: Factory AC that hasn’t worked in years · system still set up for R-12 · car being restored or restomodded.

Car AC Repair Questions
Hot air, weak cold, recharge costs and strange noises, answered.
Why is my car AC blowing hot air?
The most common causes are low refrigerant from a leak, an AC compressor that isn’t switching on, or an electrical fault like a blown fuse or bad relay. A blend door stuck on the heat side can do it too.
Why is my car AC not as cold as it used to be?
A slow refrigerant leak is the usual reason. As the level drops, the air gets warmer bit by bit. A dirty condenser or a weak compressor can cause it too.
How long does a car AC recharge last?
In a sealed system with no leak, a recharge should last years. If your AC goes warm again within weeks or months, the system is leaking and the leak needs fixing.
How much does a car AC recharge cost?
It depends mainly on the refrigerant your car uses. Older cars use R-134a; most newer cars use R-1234yf, which costs more. A label under the hood tells you which. Call 936-661-2675 with your year, make and model.
How much does it cost to fix a car AC compressor?
The compressor is one of the bigger AC repairs, and the price depends on the vehicle and whether other parts got damaged when it failed. We make sure the compressor is really the problem before replacing anything.
Why is my car AC making a weird noise?
Grinding or rattling with the AC on usually comes from the compressor or its clutch. A squeal can be a worn belt. Turn the AC off and get it checked before the compressor locks up.
