Car Engine Repair in Tomball and Northwest Houston
Engines usually warn you before something big goes: a new noise, oil spots on the driveway, coolant that keeps going down, white smoke or a temperature gauge that creeps up. Catch it early and the fix is often a lot smaller.
We do mechanical work from small jobs to engine repairs: blown head gaskets, oil leaks, knocking and ticking noises, timing belts and timing chains, and damage after an engine has overheated. We find the cause first. If the engine is too far gone, we’ll tell you whether a repair, a rebuilt engine or a replacement makes sense.
If you’re looking for an engine repair shop near you in Tomball, Klein or Magnolia, call 936-661-2675. Tell us what the engine is doing, when it started and if any warning lights are on. We work on everyday cars and trucks, and classics too.
What’s Wrong With Your Engine?
Head gasket, oil leak, knocking, timing belt or a whole new engine? Here’s what each problem looks like, what causes it and how soon you need to deal with it.
Blown Head Gasket Repair
The head gasket seals the joint between the engine block and the cylinder head. It keeps pressure in the cylinders and keeps coolant and oil in their own passages. When it fails, coolant can get into the cylinders or the oil.
Why is my oil milky?
Milky, light brown oil on the dipstick usually means coolant is getting into the oil, often from the head gasket. A bit of creamy gunk under the oil cap on its own can just be condensation from short trips, so check the dipstick too.
Why is there white smoke coming from my exhaust?
Thick white smoke that keeps coming once the engine is warm, often with a sweet smell, usually means coolant is burning in the cylinders.
What causes a head gasket to blow?
Overheating is the most common cause. Heat can also warp an aluminum cylinder head, and then a new gasket won’t seal until the head is fixed. Age and high miles play a part too.
Is it worth fixing a blown head gasket?
Often, yes, on a car that’s in good shape otherwise. If the engine overheated badly or has a lot of other wear, we’ll go through the repair against what the car is worth.
Warning: If the temperature gauge goes into the red, pull over and turn the engine off. Driving on an overheating engine is how a gasket job turns into a new engine.
Engine Oil Leak Repair
Oil spots on the driveway or a burning oil smell after a drive usually mean a gasket or seal has started to leak. Gaskets and seals go hard and crack with heat and age.
Where is my oil leak coming from?
The usual places are the valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, rear main seal, front crank seal, oil filter and drain plug. Oil runs down and gets blown around, so the drip isn’t always right under the leak.
Why does my car smell like burning oil?
Usually oil is leaking onto something hot. A leaking valve cover gasket can drip onto the exhaust manifold and smoke. Get it fixed, because a heavy leak onto a hot exhaust can catch fire.
How much does an oil leak repair cost?
It depends where the leak is. A drain plug or valve cover gasket is often a smaller job. The rear main seal sits between the engine and the transmission, and the transmission often has to come out to reach it. Call 936-661-2675 with your year, make and model.
Is it OK to drive with an oil leak?
A slow seep usually isn’t urgent if you check the oil and keep it topped up. A fast drip, oil on the exhaust or a red oil light is a different story. Running low on oil can ruin an engine.
Good to know: If you’re adding oil between oil changes, it’s either leaking or burning. Both are worth a look.
Engine Knocking and Ticking Noises
A new noise from the engine is worth listening to. Some are small, like a lifter tick that goes away after an oil change. Others, like a deep knock that gets worse as you speed up, mean stop driving.
What causes engine knocking when accelerating?
A pinging or rattling knock under load is often the fuel lighting too early. Common causes are fuel with too low an octane for the engine, carbon build-up or a timing problem. Left alone, it can damage the engine.
What does rod knock sound like?
A deep, heavy knock from inside the engine that gets louder as the revs and load go up. It comes from worn rod bearings. Stop driving it, because running it more can cause severe damage.
Why is my engine ticking?
Ticking is often valve or lifter noise from low or old oil, or a worn lifter. An exhaust manifold leak can sound almost the same. Check the oil level first, then have it looked at.
Can I drive with a knocking engine?
A light tick with the oil level full usually isn’t urgent. A deep knock, a knock that’s getting louder or a knock with the oil light on is not safe to keep driving.
Warning: Knocking with the red oil light on means low oil pressure. Pull over and turn the engine off.
Timing Belt and Timing Chain Replacement
The timing belt or chain keeps the crankshaft and camshafts turning together, so the valves open at the right moment. A belt is rubber and has to be replaced on a schedule. A chain is metal and usually lasts much longer, but it can still wear and stretch.
What’s the difference between a timing belt and a timing chain?
A belt is reinforced rubber with a set replacement interval in your owner’s manual. A chain is metal, runs in the engine oil and usually lasts much longer. Your manual says which one your engine has.
What are the symptoms of a bad timing chain?
A rattle from the front of the engine, often worst right after a cold start, a check engine light with cam and crank timing codes, misfires and poor running. Those codes don’t always mean the chain, so it needs testing.
What happens if a timing belt breaks?
The engine stops and won’t restart. On many engines, called interference engines, the pistons then hit the valves, which can bend valves and break pistons. That’s why it’s worth replacing the belt on time.
Should I replace the water pump with the timing belt?
On many engines, yes. The timing belt drives the water pump and most of the labor is the same, so doing both at once saves paying for that work twice.
Good to know: Go by the miles or years in your owner’s manual. You can’t always see how worn a timing belt is just by looking at it.
Engine Replacement
Sometimes an engine is too far gone to fix, like one that’s seized or badly damaged by overheating. Then the choice is a used engine, a rebuilt or remanufactured engine, or putting the money toward another car. We’ll talk you through which one makes sense for your car.
How much does an engine replacement cost?
It depends on the engine you go with (used, rebuilt or remanufactured), the vehicle and how much labor the swap takes. Call 936-661-2675 with your year, make and model and we’ll go through the options.
What’s the difference between a rebuilt and a remanufactured engine?
A rebuilt engine has its worn and broken parts replaced and the good parts reused. A remanufactured engine is taken further, with most parts replaced, to get as close to factory spec as possible. It usually costs more.
Is a used engine a good idea?
It can be, but you’re trusting the miles and history of a car you’ve never seen. A used engine usually isn’t inspected or rebuilt before it’s sold.
Is it worth replacing the engine in an older car?
If the rest of the car is solid and you like it, often yes. If it has high miles, rust or body damage and other repairs coming, it may not be. We’ll give you the full picture so you can decide.
Good to know: Whatever killed the old engine, like a bad radiator or an oil leak, needs fixing before the new one goes in.

Engine Repair Questions
Head gaskets, knocking, oil leaks and timing belts: the signs, the risks and what to do.
What are the signs of a blown head gasket?
Coolant going down with no leak you can see, thick white exhaust smoke that smells sweet, milky oil on the dipstick, bubbles in the coolant tank, overheating and rough running. A few of these together is a strong sign. We test it before any work starts.
Can I drive with a blown head gasket?
It’s not a good idea. Coolant in the oil stops the oil protecting the engine, and every time it overheats the damage can spread, like a warped cylinder head. Drive it as little as you can and get it checked.
How much does a head gasket repair cost?
It depends on the engine. Some take a lot more work to take apart than others, and a warped cylinder head adds more work again. Call 936-661-2675 with your year, make and model.
What does it mean when your engine is knocking?
A light pinging when you accelerate is often the fuel lighting too early. A deep, heavy knock from inside the engine that gets louder with speed is often worn rod bearings. That one’s serious, so stop driving and get it checked.
Why is my car leaking oil?
Most oil leaks come from gaskets and seals that have gone hard with heat and age: the valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket or the front or rear main seal. A loose drain plug or oil filter can leak too. We find where it’s coming from before replacing anything.
When should I replace my timing belt?
Go by your owner’s manual. Many are due somewhere from 60,000 to over 100,000 miles, depending on the engine. If you bought the car used and don’t know if it’s been done, have it checked. On a lot of engines, a broken belt means bent valves.
