Car Tune-Up in Tomball, TX
Rough idle, poor gas mileage or a hard start? We do tune-ups on late-model cars and old-school tune-ups on classics, at our shop in Tomball.
Tune-Ups for Cars, Trucks and Classics in Tomball
A tune-up today isn’t what it was in the 70s. On a modern car it usually means new spark plugs, checking or replacing ignition coils, new air and cabin filters and a good look over the engine. On a classic it still means points, timing and the carburetor.
We do both. If your car idles rough, hesitates, starts hard or is burning more gas than it used to, a tune-up is often the fix. If there’s a misfire code, we test the coils and plugs before swapping parts.
Our customers say we’re one of the best shops in Tomball for the small stuff as well as the big jobs. Looking for a tune-up near you in Tomball? Call 936-661-2675 and tell us what the car is doing, or ask what’s due for your mileage.
What Does Your Car Need in a Tune-Up?
A tune-up means different things on a modern car and a classic. Here’s what’s involved, the signs you need one, and what each part does.
What Is Included in a Tune-Up
On most modern cars, a tune-up means new spark plugs, an ignition coil check, new air and cabin filters, and a look at belts, hoses and fluids. There’s no points or carb to adjust anymore.
What is included in a tune-up for a car?
Spark plugs, filters and an inspection, plus anything your owner’s manual lists for your mileage.
What is included in a tune-up for a truck?
The same basics, but V8 trucks have more plugs and sometimes more labor to reach them.
What’s on a car tune-up checklist?
Plugs, coils, air filter, cabin filter, belts, hoses, fluids, battery and a scan for stored codes.
What is a car tune-up?
It’s routine maintenance to keep the engine running the way it should. It’s not a fix for a specific problem, but it often clears up rough running.
Good to know: Your owner’s manual lists what’s due at each mileage. Bring it or we’ll look it up.
Signs You Need a Tune-Up
Rough idle, hesitation when you hit the gas, hard starts and worse gas mileage are the classic signs. A misfire code or a check engine light can point the same way.
Signs your car needs a tune-up
Stumbling or hesitating when you speed up, a shake at idle, and the engine feeling weaker than it used to.
Signs your truck needs a tune-up
Same signs, plus a drop in towing power or mileage that doesn’t have another cause.
How often does a car need a tune-up?
Go by the manual. Newer cars go a long way between plug changes; older cars need tune-ups more often.
Will a tune-up fix my check engine light?
If the light is on, we read the code first. A tune-up fixes worn parts, not every fault.
Signs: Rough idle · hesitation · hard starts · worse gas mileage · misfire code.
Spark Plug Replacement
Spark plugs fire the fuel in each cylinder. As they wear, the spark gets weaker and you get misfires, rough idle and worse mileage. Many newer cars use iridium or platinum plugs that last a long time.
How often should spark plugs be replaced?
Often 60,000 to 100,000 miles or more on newer cars with iridium or platinum plugs. Older cars with copper plugs need them much sooner.
How much does spark plug replacement cost?
It depends on the engine. Some V6 engines need the intake taken off to reach the back plugs, which adds labor.
How long does it take to replace spark plugs?
A four-cylinder is usually quick. V6 and V8 engines with hard-to-reach plugs take longer.
What are the symptoms of worn spark plugs?
Misfires, rough idle, hard starts and a drop in gas mileage.
Good to know: We use the plug type and gap your engine calls for.
Ignition Coil Replacement
Most modern engines have one ignition coil per cylinder. When one fails, that cylinder misfires, the engine shakes and the check engine light comes on, sometimes flashing.
Signs of a bad ignition coil
A misfire on one cylinder, a shake at idle, loss of power and a check engine light with a P030 code.
How much does an ignition coil replacement cost?
Often just the failed coil gets replaced. Some engines make them easy to reach; some don’t.
Is it the ignition coil or the spark plug?
Both cause misfires. Swapping the coil to another cylinder and seeing if the misfire follows it is a common test.
How often should ignition coils be replaced?
Coils don’t have a set interval. They get replaced when they fail.
Good to know: Flashing check engine light = active misfire. Ease off and get it checked.
Carburetor Tune-Up for Classic Cars
On a classic, a tune-up is the old-school kind: points and condenser, setting the timing with a timing light, and adjusting the carburetor so the car starts and idles right.
Points and condenser tune-ups on classics
Older ignitions use points that wear and need adjusting. An electronic ignition conversion ends that for good.
How is ignition timing adjusted on a classic?
Ignition timing gets set with a timing light at the distributor. Off timing means poor power, pinging or hard starts.
What’s included in a carburetor tune-up?
Idle mixture, idle speed, choke and float level, plus checking for vacuum leaks.
Carburetor tune-up or EFI conversion?
If the carb keeps giving you trouble, an EFI conversion like Holley Sniper is the long-term fix.
Good to know: Classic engines often need zinc in the oil for flat-tappet cams. Ask us about it.
